Millpond Enhancement and Restoration project
Project Overview
The University of Oregon’s Millpond Enhancement and Restoration project outlines a transformation of the historic Millpond by enhancing the ecological, educational, and passive recreation potential of this highly visible campus open space.
The plan focuses on restoring native wetland and riparian habitat, improving water quality, and enhancing stormwater management through strategic grading, invasive species removal, and upgraded outlet structures. These efforts will stabilize eroding banks, reduce pollutants entering the Willamette River, and support native wildlife.
In addition to ecological benefits, the project will enrich campus and community life with accessible trails, boardwalks, and overlooks for passive recreation and nature observation. It will also serve as a living laboratory, offering hands-on opportunities for students and researchers to study water quality, habitat function, and adaptive landscape management.
Objectives
Improve Water Quality: Remove accumulated sediment and improve stormwater outfalls.
Restore Native Habitat: Expand and enhance habitats for native bird and aquatic species.
Encourage Passive Recreation: Create inviting spaces for walking, nature viewing, and reflection.
Support Education & Research: Improve access for outdoor labs and field studies.
Enhance Aesthetics: Remove invasive plants, restore native vegetation, and improve views and visitor experience.
