In 2009 the Office of Sustainability secured a $7,000 grant from EWEB to purchase devices that capture energy from elliptical machines. Sixteen machines were retrofitted at the UO student recreation center. Although only a small amount of energy is generated, the machines provide a hands-on educational opportunity for the UO community to get a visceral feel for what it takes to generate a kilowatt-hour of electricity. The Associated Press covered the launch of the program. The article and accompanying photograph were picked up by scores of newspapers around the world.
